Municipal rules for planter boxes as speed bumps

What the municipality requires

  • As a rule, requires a permit, neighbor consultation and that the boxes are built according to drawings/specifications.
  • Permits usually apply spring through fall and must be renewed annually.
  • Parking is normally not allowed on the stretch where the boxes are placed.
  • Do not place planter boxes on or right next to existing speed bumps/road narrowings.

What you as residents need to do

  • Application: Fill in the municipality’s form/online service and collect your neighbors’ signatures.
  • Drawings: Follow the dimensions, construction, ballast and reflector placement as instructed.
  • Season: Put the boxes out during the permitted period and bring them in before winter/snow removal.
  • Maintenance: Take care of planting, watering and cleanup. Make sure plants don’t block visibility or hide children.
  • Reflectors: Check that reflectors are always mounted and visible.

We help you interpret the municipality’s requirements and build the boxes exactly to the drawing.

Placement & safety – key factors

    Clear lane width & accessibility

Ensure passage for garbage trucks and emergency vehicles. We size the opening according to the municipality’s minimum requirements.

    • Plan turnaround space and service passages
    • Avoid “tight pockets” that force vehicles to back up
    Visibility & distance

Do not place boxes near intersections, hilltops or curves with limited visibility. Keep the prescribed distance.

    • Maintain good visibility in both directions
    • Mark with approved reflectors
    Rhythm along the street

Place the boxes in pairs (chicane) and repeat in groups along longer stretches – an even rhythm is better than spacing them too far apart.

    • Group spacing according to the municipality’s recommendation
    • Plan for removal during snow clearing

Child safety: plants should not grow so tall that children are hidden behind the box. Do not encourage play in the roadway.

The municipality’s drawings specify ballast (for example stone or sand) so that the box cannot be moved or tipped over.

Reflectors are mandatory and must always be in place. We build the boxes with reflectors according to the drawing.

The residents are responsible for maintaining the plantings. If you can’t, you should appoint a person or group to be responsible for upkeep.
