Loading dock impact protection absorbs the impact when trucks back up to the dock and protects both the building and the vehicle from costly damage. A loading dock is hit repeatedly every day, and without protection, both the dock edge and the doors quickly wear down. At Nordguard, you'll find dock bumpers in durable rubber that can handle heavy, frequent traffic year after year.

Dock bumpers are part of our wall protection range and belong to our broader selection of impact protection. If you also need to protect the wall along the dock from scratches and marks, you can add bumper rails.

Rubber Dock Bumpers

Rubber bumpers are mounted on the dock edge and cushion the force as the vehicle comes in. They are the most common type of protection on loading docks and come in several sizes to suit different dock heights and vehicle types. The bumper absorbs and distributes the impact so that neither the dock nor the truck is damaged during daily traffic.

Steel-Reinforced Impact Bumpers

For intensive traffic and heavy vehicles, a steel-reinforced impact bumper provides extra strength. The steel spreads the force over a larger area and extends service life where the load is greatest. This type is well suited for terminals and docks with many daily dockings.

Mounting and Placement

The protection should be positioned at the height of the truck's bumper so the force is absorbed at the right level. Measure the dock height and the bumper height of your vehicles before choosing a model, so the bumpers end up where the vehicles actually make contact. Usually at least two bumpers are mounted per dock position, one on each side of the door, so the force is distributed evenly. Wider doors and varying vehicle heights may require more.

Where Are Dock Bumpers Used?

Dock bumpers are used at goods receiving and shipping areas in warehouses, terminals and production facilities. See more examples of solutions for freight terminals and warehousing and distribution, where the loading dock is often the busiest and most exposed point.

Frequently Asked Questions About Loading Dock Impact Protection

For most loading docks, rubber bumpers work well because they cushion the force and protect both the dock and the vehicle. For heavy, frequent traffic, a steel-reinforced impact bumper is a more durable choice that can withstand more daily dockings.

The protection should be at the height of the trucks' bumpers when they are parked at the dock. Measure the distance from the ground to the bumper and position the dock bumpers there, so the force is absorbed at the right level instead of hitting the dock edge.

Usually at least two bumpers are mounted per dock position, one on each side of the door, so the force is absorbed evenly. Wider doors or docks with varying vehicle heights may require more for full coverage.

Yes. Rubber bumpers are made for outdoor use and withstand weather, moisture and cold without losing performance. The rubber retains its cushioning ability even in freezing winter temperatures.

The bumpers are bolted to the dock edge at the correct height based on the vehicles' bumpers. Steel-reinforced models are installed the same way but can withstand higher loads. Each product is delivered with fasteners and mounting instructions.
